From a mindset of passionate hatred for Law, Aisha Adamu, a Law student at El-Amin University Minna is feeling grateful that her “parents made a good choice” for her professional life.

Ms Aisha, 100 level, disclosed this to EU News in an interaction shortly after returning from a Study Tour at the High Court of Justice Minna. Study tours (also called Educational Trips) are part of EU academic strategies to actualising the University’s vision for experiential learning.

Narrating how she found herself studying Law, Aisha said “I wanted to study Mass Communication but when I chose it, my parents were somehow against it, so they chose Law for me. Mass Communication is a good field; I should even say it’s one of my favourites. When I was in Secondary School, I was a newscaster (laughed).”

Asked whether she is enjoying her studies in Law, she happily replied: “Yes, I should say they’ve made a good choice for me. At first, I didn’t find it interesting. I even hated Law. I wouldn’t want anything that has to do with Law because I used to think that Lawyers are liars (laughed); people who are wrong in everything they do.”

Aisha’s hatred for Lawyers was premised on a wrong perception, but that perception has permanently changed for good. “The way I see it, it turns out to be a different thing. When I started studying law, and you know our visitation to the High Court that day made me understand many things.”

Aisha’s experience is the story of how parental influence on career choices may cause negative consequences on students' academic performance in higher institutions of learning but visionary academic planning can outdo the damage and provide a focus for emerging professionals.

As for Aisha Adamu, she now knows that although there are bad eggs among lawyers, just as there are among every other profession. However, “when you study law, you are the one to choose the way you want to use your knowledge.”
